A screw extractor is a specialized tool used to remove damaged or stripped screws that cannot be removed with a regular screwdriver

Steps for removing a damaged screw

  1. Choose the correct size: Ensure that the screw extractor is the correct size for the screw you are trying to remove. A larger extractor may damage the screw further, while a smaller extractor may not have enough grip to remove it.

  2. Drill a hole: Using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw extractor, drill a hole into the center of the stripped screw. Make sure to drill the hole as straight as possible.

  3. Insert the screw extractor: Insert the screw extractor into the hole you drilled. Turn it in a counterclockwise direction, applying steady pressure to ensure it grips the inside of the screw.

  4. Turn the extractor: Using a wrench or pliers, turn the extractor in a counterclockwise direction to remove the screw. If the screw is stubborn, try tapping the extractor lightly with a hammer to loosen it.

  5. Remove the screw: Once the screw is loosened, you can remove it with your fingers or a pair of pliers.

Note: It's essential to use caution when using a screw extractor, as it can break if too much force is applied. Also, ensure that you use the appropriate safety gear, such as safety goggles, to protect your eyes from flying debris.

When to use a Screw Extractor

A screw extractor is the ideal tool when you need to remove a stripped or damaged screw that cannot be removed with a regular screwdriver. This typically happens when the screw head is worn or stripped, making it difficult to grip with a screwdriver, or when the screw is stuck due to rust or other factors. A screw extractor is designed to grip the inside of the screw and turn it counterclockwise, allowing you to remove it without damaging the surrounding material. It's important to note that a screw extractor is not a universal solution and may not work in all situations, especially if the screw is completely rusted or corroded. However, when used correctly and in the right circumstances, a screw extractor can be a useful and effective tool for removing stubborn screws.
